Pinktober in Killeen, TX

Putt Away Cancer events are entertaining for the whole family. The objective Putt Away Cancer is to create events that are exciting and engaging. The events include activities that are designed to meet Putt Away Cancer’s principles, goals, and programming objectives set forth in our Bylaws. Our signature event being our Putt Away Cancer Miniature Golf Tournament held at miniature golf facilities. However, due to the pandemic, we had to create new ways of fundraising and raising awareness while keeping COVID protocols. And we did just that!

We are back to building our in person presence in 2023. Coming up Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 12p-3pm, we are hosting our first PINKTOBER FESTIVAL in Killeen, TX. Not only will this be our first vendor market event, it will also be our first event outside of San Antonio, TX. We will have food trucks, bounce house, clothing vendors, accessories vendors, music and LOTS OF FUN. We plan to raise awareness of our foundation, raise money for our Circle of HOPE Awards, and continue to build community. SPREAD THE WORD and come join us if you can!

Here is an Historical account of our events: The first Putt Away Cancer Miniature Golf tournament took place 17 September 2016 at Embassy Oaks Miniature Golf Course. Tha1Radio, owned by Neka Cleaver, were our awesome hosts at the event. Our event sponsors were Judge Jason Pulliam of Bexar County 4th County Court of Appeals (signature sponsor); Derrick Miller, and Keys Bookkeeping. Rudy’s BBQ was our goody bag sponsor. With 31 participants, we raised $1445 (before expenses; $395 after). This great event was a wonderful introduction to the community.

In 2017 we expanded our reach and hosted preceding events prior our 2nd Annual Putt Away Cancer Miniature Golf Tournament, which was held on September 16th. The owners of Embassy Oaks Miniature Golf proudly sponsored one of our Circle of Hope awards. Derrick Miller, who is also a Cancer Survivor himself, returned as our 2017 signature sponsor. Joining him were 7 Hole-in-One sponsors and Tha1Radio graciously returned as our hosts and kept everyone entertained throughout the morning.Β  With 55 paid participants, we raised $1815 before expenses ($885 after).

2018 we planned to host our 1st Golf event so we can embed our organization into the Golf community as well. 14 April 2018, we hosted a Closest to the Pin Challenge at San Pedro Golf Course. This event, marked the beginning of a brand new chapter for us because our goal is to not limit our audience. While we planned to host our annual Miniature Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 15 at the Cool Crest Miniature Golf Course, San Antonio weather was fickle that year and we held a “Putting Pins Down” bowling challenge instead. We were also the featured charity at the 50 Shades of Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Fashion Show. Which totaled our fundraising year to $1280.

Then in 2019, our we took a break to help regroup and strategic build a stronger foundation to garner more exposure. In our reflection period, we were gifted an opportunity to help provide more assistance to persons battling cancer. Because of donations from San Antonio Minority Golf Association , The J.C. Cares Foundation, and Keith Jones Real Estate, we began our Linda C. Bryant HOPE Scholarship for Texas High School graduates going to college or currently enrolled college. We granted our first $500 scholarship in Aug 2019 and hosted our Circle of HOPE Awards Luncheon, where we gifted over $2000 in Circle of HOPE Awards.

2020 has proven to be a challenge for everyone. With Coronavirus threatening even healthy immune systems, those battling chronic health conditions have been forced to become more vigilant with their health hygiene practices. Therefore, we had to think outside the box and become more creative in our fundraising efforts. So we hosted our first Telethon on July 18th at Streetligion Studio. 7 poets created Cancer Warriors survivor stories for 7 survivors. through original pieces. It was a COVID-19 FRIENDLY event taped live at Streetligion Nation Radio Station, through Facebook live. We called it the 𝗕π—₯𝗨𝗑𝗖𝗛 𝗔π—ͺ𝗔𝗬 π—–π—”π—‘π—–π—˜π—₯ π—Ÿπ—œπ—©π—˜ π—§π—˜π—Ÿπ—˜π—§π—›π—’π—‘.where we raised $2044, of which we gifted $1750 in HOPE Awards (4 Crystal Branner Circle of HOPE Awards and 1 Linda C. Bryant HOPE Scholarship). The mission to inspire can not be stopped!

2021 –Β  Β For starters, on June 26th we hosted a Day of Pampering for 10 Cancer Warriors. These individuals were nominated by members of the community or by our Board members and each received or Crystal Branner Circle of HOPE Award.Β  Mrs. Pat Moore, owner of N-V-US FashionΒ  Boutique, dressed each of our Warriors. Our Former Chairwoman of the Board, Ms. Adrienne Vann (CEO of Vannity by Adrienne) was our Makeup Artist, and the phenomenal Bria Woods, who is an amazing photo journalist for the San Antonio Report, took photos of each warrior. The account of the day was be chronicled and transformed into another masterful piece called “A Survivors Story” by Streetligion Media and presented live on air during our 2021 Brunch Away Cancer Telethon on Saturday, 31 July 2021 at 11am.

2022 – Following our photoshoot and telethon, we used the images of the photoshoot and created a P.A.C. Warrior Calendar. The pictures were done so amazingly, the calendar photos can also be framed once the months have ended.

Whew…and now, in year 8…we are ready to go big and get outside again!
